5th Water Loop To The Hot Springs

I love this ride but this time I was trying to get back to the hot springs before dark. So I didn’t get much video till the road at the top 70 min in. There were no naked people in the springs when I got there and my wife was already 10 min down the trail. Still fun ride, check out the video and see what I mean.

Mountain Bike Maintenance

Mountain Bike MaintenanceHere are a couple of tips on how to get this done quickly.

1. To enjoy a smooth and quiet ride the next time you go riding on your mountain bike, give the bike a quick lube on the essential parts of the bike using a dry wax lube in dry weather conditions and wet oil type during wet weather conditions.

2. When you get back from shredding the trails, the first thing you will want to do is spray your bike down with a low pressure water hose and get as much dirt of the bike possible. Having dirt on your chain and gears will increase wear and tear fast.

3. Next you want to take a solvent and spray or pour it on the entire chain and onto the gear teeth. You will want to let it sit for a while and then you should scrub the chain and gear teeth with an old toothbrush.

Crest Trail Part Deux

Wesanator

Wesanator

I had so much fun Friday that I had to take my stepson Kris up there on Sunday.  This turned out to be a great day.  Kris, Bill and I headed up to the start of the trail. We got there about 3:30 pm and hit the trail about 4:15.  This time I didn’t forget the keys to my car. My pretty wife Laura shuttled us so we didn’t have to come back and get one of the cars, which was really nice.  I was hoping to do “puke” hill this time with out stopping.

Well I didn’t, I had to step off because I lost my balance, but aleast I didn’t have to walk this time.  Kris, he made me proud as he climbed it first time out (Damn teenagers, makes me wish I was 17 again.LOL) and claimed his victory. Way to go Kris.

The rest was pretty nice, called wife from half way point so she could have some food for when we got done. Way to go wifey. Here are some poor pics. Enjoy.

The Crest 08-14-09

Wesanator

Wesanator

This Trip started off a little different. Bill wanted to do the Crest trail, which involved a shuttle. So we took separate cars, parked mine in a shopping center since the park and ride lot was close, those bastards. LOL. And off we go we got up to the trail head and got parked. It was starting to sprinkle. We got changed into our riding gear and it had started to rain, bummer huh. We sat there while Bill was trying to find us another ride that might be close. I’m saying it will pass in about 15 min., he said ok lets give it a few and glad we did, it burned off and we yanked out bikes out and hit the trail.

How to Get Started with Mountain Biking

Wesanator

Wesley Miller

Mountain Biking can be done almost anywhere. It is an individual sport which requires endurance, strength and bike-handling skills. It is therefore essential to know the basic information to get started with Mountain Biking. Here they are:

  • Familiarize yourself with what Mountain Biking is all about. There are so many informative sources you can refer to, from books and magazines including the internet. Getting the gist of the sport is a big step.
  • Although Mountain Biking is by far one of the safer sports, it is still important to know how to prevent injuries. Also, understanding that Mountain Biking can be dangerous is essential.

    Climbing Tips

    Wesanator

    Wesanator

Climbing, or riding uphill, can be quite a balancing act if the terrain starts to get steep. On gentle inclines, there is really no difference in technique from level riding except that you have to pedal harder and keep your weight centered on the bike with a slight forward lean. Select a comfortable gear and try to stay seated in the saddle. Make sure that you saddle height is high enough for good leg extension. Anticipate the coming terrain, and be prepared for roots, rocks, or logs that may require some momentum to carry you over. Avoid a big burst of power, and avoid expending too much energy for any one obstacle if the uphill trail is long or extended. Pace yourself, establish a nice breathing rhythm, and maybe use your bar end extenders to change your hand position and to stretch your body out a bit and shift your weight a bit forward. A glance at the top (or as far as you can see) is ok, but stay focused on the trail in front of you and take it in sections.

A Close Call With Sam And The Bears

    Bill Messick

    Bill Messick

I have to leave early in the morning for a trip back to Woodward Oklahoma, so my idea was to get a ride in before the trip. So about 7:00 pm I packed my stuff and headed out for a ride with Sam my German Shepherd sitting in the seat next to me. I never really plan a ride I just point my car and end up where I ride, most people that ride with me know this fact. We I ended up at the top of the Alpine Loop about 7:30 for a fast ride around the Ridge 157 to the South Fork loop. It was about 71 degrees when I hit the trail, nicer than the 91 degrees I had come from in the valley 4,00 feet below.

the trail was pretty busy today with lot’s of foot traffic and a few motorcycles running back and forth, but nothing would have prepared me for what was to come. But let’s not get ahead of myself, there is no easy way to tell this tale so I’m just going to tell it the way I saw it and you could say I saw a little to much!

The trail was pretty dry and dusty, it hasn’t seen much rain in the past few weeks. I slipped out on a few of the climbs, but was moving pretty fast along the trail, it was nice and cool out and the sun was setting in the next hour. So I was trying to get around the loop in around 60 min to beat my current record of 75 min. We hit the 4 way at the South Fork turn and shot down thought the deep woods to the campsites below. There was allot of people camping in the campground at the road crossing at the bottom of the South Fork Trail.

Hooking up with like minded MTB owners

    Wesanator

    Wesanator

This comes out of Oregon but I think we should try something like this around Utah also, If any of you out there want to form a group let us know we will be happy to oblige. And If any of you come from oregon and want to hook up around Utah County then also lets us know

You know how Corvette owners like to get together with other Corvette owners to fawn over each others’ cars? Or how Harley Davidson riders hang out with other Harley riders? Well, it turns out mountain bikers are starting to do the same thing along brand lines – something that wasn’t really feasible before the internet. Forget freeride and downhill groups – in 2009 it’s Trek Fuel 8 EX and Specialized Stumpjumper FS owner groups.
