Cry Me A Rainbow!

By Bill Messick

Wes and I took a ride from Timpooneke Road to Grove Creek today, about 10 min from the bowl it started to rain, so I didn’t get any video or pics this time. This was a thunder and lightning storm that hit us, big cracks of thunder were right on top of us. It didn’t seem to bother Sam who was running in the rain loving it. As we got to the top near the campground the rain broke and the sun came out a little and the rain stopped. I knew from previous years that the clay on the downhill was going to stick us to the ground and it did. As we came down the other side the mud built up on our tires to the point that we had to stop and carry them for about 1/3 of a mile.

As we got to the rocky section of the road we got on and started rolling, the mud flying all around us as it shed from the tires and bike. We made it to the single track at Grove Creek 3.5 miles from the trail head at the bottom and started down. It was slick in spots but the trail was good as we passed Grove Creek Springs and on down into the next grassy area. The stinging nettle got me pretty bad this time I can still feel it burning in my legs and fingers, it is a bad part of a very good trail.

We got down to the bridge and crossed over and headed down toward the bench at the top of the big falls. In past years I have road off the rocks in front of the bench but it has broken away pretty bad so i got off and walked it 25 feet across to the better side. We didn’tsee anyone on the trail today so it was pretty smooth going to the first cliffs, that is where I came across a baby rattle snake laying on the trail. It was in it’s first year the tail still black with its first rattle. Cute little thing, I flushed it off the trail so it wouldn’t get hurt and off we went to the parking lot up 500 North in Pleasant Grove.

This was a very good ride and the second time for me this week.
